The beach is packed this Fourth of July and it's turning out to be a busy day for lifeguards at Atlantic Beach.
By early afternoon lifeguards had already rescued five people caught in rip currents.
There have been a total of 20 rescues since Wednesday.
Lifeguards tell us the rip currents are very rough and flags are up in three spots where they're not allowing people in the water.
The National Weather Service says a moderate rip current risk is in effect for Carteret, Onslow, Outer Banks Dare & Outer Banks Hyde
through Thursday night.
Farther down the coast in Brunswick County rip currents are to blame for three drownings on Wednesday.
