After a wreck cut a coast-to-coast, charity bicycle ride short, a Greenville orthodontist hits the road Thursday morning to cross the finish line.
Dr. Dennis Ross in Greenville set out on a mission in the dark, early morning hours of September 26th: ride his bicycle from Atlantic Beach, N.C. to San Diego C.A.
The idea was to draw attention and funding to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County.
By October 3rd, Dr. Ross' ride was cut short in Arizona. Nearly 550 miles from the finish line on the golden coast, a rear-end wreck on the highway left the companion SUV in shambles and the team deflated.
Ross said days later he would finish the ride. Now, six weeks later, he is hitting the road.
Ross said his team is flying out to Arizona Thursday morning and driving to the exact spot of the October 3rd wreck. From there, he will pedal 550 miles on to the goal.
The goal of the ride was to raise $75,000 in all for the local charity. By ride time Thursday morning, Ross' efforts were 90% funded, with $68,130 donated.
Ross estimates in total, the trip will have taken nearly nine days, averaging 320 miles pedaled per day.
