Referee Dies During NC High School Football Game

A long-time referee of high school and college football games has died after collapsing during a game in High Point.

Len Reynolds of the North State Football Officials Association says 61-year-old Eric McCoy, of Greensboro, was pronounced dead Friday night after suffering an apparent heart attack.

McCoy was officiating at a game between Ragsdale High School and High Point Central before a crowd of about 400. He collapsed toward the end of the first half and was briefly revived by a doctor who was in the stands watching the game. He was taken to a local hospital, but Reynolds says he doesn't know if McCoy died at the hospital or on the way.

Reynolds says McCoy was a referee at high school and college games for 20 years.
