FRIENDLY FIRE: Raleigh Officer Shot At Apartment Complex

Gunfire from another officer's weapon injured a Raleigh police officer this morning.

Raleigh police say Officer K.J. Barefoot was treated and released from WakeMed after being wounded in his left leg.

The shooting happened around 2:00 a.m. on Colbert Creek Loop after police encountered a man who was armed with a handgun.

Police say Sgt. J.D. Malzahn fired his weapon, and Officer Barefoot was wounded.

Police say the shooting remains under investigation, and no one has been charged at this time.

Multiple media outlets report one of Raleigh's finest was rushed to the hospital early Thursday morning after being shot.

WRAL reports the shooting was reported around 3 a.m. Thursday at the Meridian at Wakefield apartment complex on Calloway Gap Road. That is near Capital Boulevard in north Raleigh.

Reports indicate the officer was shot in the hip and taken to the hospital, escorted by several patrol cars.

No word yet on any other injuries in this shooting or any arrests.
