Quarry Wins County Board, Not Residents

On Tuesday night, Martin Marietta Materials was granted a green light for a proposed quarry that would-be neighbors have been protesting for a couple years.

According to the Jacksonville Daily News, the Onslow County Board of Adjustment granted a special zoning permit for 18,000 acres in Maple Hill for the purpose of mining limestone.

Area residents have battled against the permit for a couple years now, citing the potential of depleted water tables. Residents said shrinking water tables would lead to crop damage and erosion.

The paper reports the company now must apply for a state-issued mining permit. Residents will have 30 days to appeal that next step.
