Problems Persist For Hatteras Inlet

Shifting sand continues to cause problems to get the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferries back on their original route.

Tests conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers late last month showed sand already started to shift back to areas dredged several weeks earlier in three areas of the Hatteras Inlet.

An overnight storm in January made the original route too shallow for ferries to travel and forced the DOT to switch to a longer route.

There are already 30 trips each way. Another six trips in each direction will start on Tuesday for Memorial Day visitors.

The Corps of Engineers is working on a long-term solution.
