Prison Inmate Charged With Attempted Murder

An Eastern Carolina prison inmate is charged with the attempted murder of a correctional officer.

According to the Department of Public Safety, 32-year-old John Wood is charged with assaulting a correctional officer at Maury Correctional Institution as the officer made rounds on a cell block at lunchtime Thursday.

The officer was treated at the hospital and released. The Greene County Sheriff's Office is investigating and Wood is currently at Central Prison in Raleigh.

Wood was serving a life sentence for first degree murder and burglary. He's had several infractions in prison including fighting, assault with a weapon, and threatening to injure staff.
