Police ID Body Found In Tar River

Greenville police have identified the body of a man found in the Tar River on Saturday.

Police say no foul play is suspected in the death of Thomas Thigpen. An autopsy says there were no visible signs of trauma on the 61 year old's body.

Thigpen lived in Greenville, but his North Carolina identification had a Durham address. His body was found around 2:00 p.m. Saturday near Warren Street.

Police are asking anyone who had contact with Thigpen since February 9th to give the Major Crimes Unit a call at 252-329-4176.

Greenville police are investigating a body that was found in the Tar River Saturday afternoon.

According to officers two people were walking on a sidewalk along the Tar River near Dockside Apartments around 2 p.m. when they noticed something strange in the water and called police.

Once on scene, officers found a person dead in the river. Police are looking into the possibility that the body floated down the river. They are also reviewing reports of missing persons in the area.

The body was taken to the Pitt County Medical Examiner's office for analysis.

Right now police say they do not know the cause of death or the identity of the victim.
