UPDATE: Man who was shot during home invasion now behind bars

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A man who was shot during a home invasion is out of the hospital, and now behind bars.

23-year-old Danny Lewis of Greenville went before a judge Monday morning, charged with armed robbery and burglary.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says Lewis, along with 19 year old Ryan Aytch of La Grange and 23 year old Dashawn Dail of Kinston, invaded a home on Paul's Place in Grimesland last Tuesday.

During the crime, deputies say a resident fired shots at the men, hitting Lewis.

The men took off, but deputies eventually caught up to them when they wrecked their car.

Lewis was taken to Vidant for surgery.

He's now in jail under a $1,000,000 bond, while Aytch and Dail are being held under $300,000 bonds.

Deputies have now charged two men and have warrants out for a third after a home invasion where the victim opened fire.

Ryan Aytch, 19, of La Grange, and Dashawn Dail, 23, of Kinston, have both been charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and first degree burglary. They say Danny Lewis of Greenville will face similar charges when he's released from Vidant Medical Center.

Pitt County deputies say the three tried to rob a home on Paul Place in Grimesland Tuesday night, but one resident fought back.

Mary Johnson lives in the mobile home with her boyfriend, Nathaniel Rembert.

Johnson told WITN that she and Rembert, along with their 14-month-old, were in the living room when three men snapped open the locked screen door.

Johnson grabbed her son and ran to a back room, while she says Rembert managed to get his revolver and unloaded the weapon, firing six times.

She said the men dropped their shotgun and ran out.

A few minutes later, troopers were called to a vehicle in a ditch on Highway 33.

Inside the vehicle was a man with a gunshot wound to his arm, as well as another man, who was uninjured.

Johnson says early this morning she and her son were returning to the home, after spending the night with her mother, when she saw the third suspect walking down Highway 33. She called deputies, and says they picked him up as well. Deputies say that man walking down the road was Dashawn Dail.

The woman says they don't know why someone would come to their home to rob them as they don't have anything valuable.

Aytch and Dail are both being held on $300,000 secured bonds.

Deputies say around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, they were called to the scene of a wreck at 6266 NC 33 East, where they discovered a vehicle in a ditch.

Inside the vehicle was a man with a gunshot wound in the arm, as well as another man, uninjured.

Around that same time, deputies also received a call to respond to an alleged, attempted burglary at a residence on Paul Place, occupied by two adults and a child.

The caller told authorities that at least two men had entered the home through the front door, and the male resident shot at them, injuring one.

The two suspects then reportedly ran away, fleeing in their vehicle.

Spokeswoman Christy Wallace says the injured man they found at the wreck was taken to Vidant and was in surgery as of 2:15 a.m.

She says this is a fluid investigation and more details will become available as the case develops.
