Secession Amendment Gets Enough Signatures In North Carolina

An online petition asking that North Carolina be allowed to withdraw from the United States has received the required number of signatures.

The petition was filed Friday on the White House web site. Similar petitions are up for about two dozen other states as well.

This morning at 9:00 a.m. 25,444 people had signed the North Carolina petition, meaning White House staff "will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response."

It's likely the petitions won't go anywhere since the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled several times that states cannot secede.

Previous Story

A Pittsboro man has filed a petition with the White House to allow our state to withdraw from the United States and create its own new government. Similar petitions are up for two dozen states in all.

The petition specifically asks the Obama Administration to "peacefully grant the State of North Carolina to withdraw from the United States and create its own NEW government." The petition was posted on November 9 here.

Early Tuesday, more than 15,000 North Carolina residents had signed the petition so far. If 25,000 people sign it by December 9, the Obama Administration must issue a formal response.
