Whether it's the recent rash of crime or just the concern about safety, there has been a significant uptick of people applying for gun permits.
In Pitt County, they've already exceeded the number of gun permit applications since last year by 250.
Every Tuesday and Thursday the Pitt County Sheriff's Office accepts applications for gun permits. Whether it's for buying a gun or to carry a concealed weapon, the sheriff says they've had 250 more applications now than this time in 2010. So far this year, there have been 1,881 permits insured to people to purchase a gun, that's 56 more than the year before. And 913 people have asked to carry and conceal their weapon which is almost 200 more than in 2010.
We spoke to two men applying for gun permits Tuesday.
"You need this for your protection because it's not the worst, but it's not best and I feel at my age, I'm too old to fight, so I got to get something to help me," said Bobby keys.
"I did it for the gun safety as well as the additional protection at the house- being aware of the laws and my rights, and everything else," said Mark Nunamaker.
Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks adds, most applicants in Pitt County are from Greenville where there have been 12 murders from 2010 until now. In 10 of those murders guns were used.
