POLICE: 3 Month Old's Grandmother Prevented Abuse, Mother Still Charged

Farmville Police said a call for service turned into a child abuse investigation.

Police said on Thursday after 6PM, they got a call to Andretta Bureny's Farmville home, where she had barricaded herself and her 3-month-old in the bathroom. Upon their arrival, police said Burney passed out and was taken to Vidant Medical Center.

Police said during the course of their investigation, they found Burney's child would have been abused at her hand if not for the baby's grandmother stepping in. Investigators said after that fact came to light, the mother was charged with intentional child abuse, inflicting serious injury. Police would not elaborate on Burney's action or intended action.

Burney was in a Pitt County Court Wednesday morning for her first appearance. Clerks told WITN the woman's next court date is set for January 3rd.
