A Pitt County Schools bus mechanic has been named the best safety inspector in the state.
Dustin Wells was recently named the 2014 best bus inspector in the state by the North Carolina Pupil Transportation Association.
Wells got the award at the group's annual conference.
He competed against nearly 30 other technicians who all qualified for the event through a written bus safety exam.
Expert judges at the conference then rigged 3 buses with mechanical issues and challenged each competitor to correctly find the problems.
Wells came in first place and says he's serious about keeping kids safe while they're on the bus. He says, "It means a lot. I try to take a lot of pride in doing that because it is for the kids. You know it's not hauling potatoes, it's hauling kids. I have four myself so I take that very seriously."
Wells will represent North Carolina at a national competition this fall.
