Pitt County Black History Quiz Bowl Is Serious Competition For Kids

The Black History Quiz Bowl in Pitt County is an event area students look forward to each year in February. This year the event had a record turnout and some excited winners.

The 20th Annual Black History Quiz Bowl was at Lake Forest Elementary School where teams of kids from all over Pitt County demonstrated their knowledge of black history, and they take it quite seriously.

"We've noticed the kids come in very nervous and very excited, but they're anxious because all the teams want to be a winner," said
Quiz Bowl Chairman Mary Nobles-Maultsby.

Hannah Campbell won the second grade essay contest with a paper called "Freedom."

"I chose to write about what the children did and what the adults mostly did how long they worked," aid Hannah.

The quiz bowl is the big event and teams study for it for months from November until February. First place in this year's quiz bowl went to Ayden Middle School. Second place went to team Hype from Holy Temple Apostolic Church. The Young Historians took third place.

One of this years co-sponsors is the Carver Library which has been a rich resource in the black community for years.

The City of Greenville, the 100 Black Men group, and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority say they will continue the quiz bowl tradition for many years to come.
