Pioneer ENC Baseball Player Chuck Hinton Dead At 78

Funeral services were held Tuesday for a baseball pioneer from eastern carolina. Charles "Chuck" Hinton passed away January 27th at the age of 78.

He was the only African American from Rocky Mount to play in Major League Baseball where he played from 1961 until 1971 for the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians and California Angels.
He was also the last Washington Senator to bat 300.
Chuck went on to become the head baseball coach at Howard University holding that position for 28 years.

He was the winningest coach in Howard history and also won the most conference championships of any coach in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Hinton is survived by his wife and three children.
