Persistent Work By Officer Lands Suspected Purse Snatcher Behind Bars

Persistent work by a Greenville police officer landed a suspected purse snatcher behind bars, just hours after it happened.

Police say a woman was walking out of the Pitt County ABC Store on East 10th Street Thursday night when someone pushed her to the ground and took her purse. The victim gave Officer J.W. Young a description of the robber who was last seen running toward Riverbluff Drive.

Young first reviewed in-store video from the liquor store and from a nearby business, spotting the robber on video. Police say the officer canvassed the neighborhood throughout the evening and eventually spotted the man walking on Riverbluff Road. During a field interview, Young found the victim's credit card in the man's pocket.

Dametrice Johnson of Greenville has been charged with strong armed robbery, assault on a female and three counts of financial card fraud. The 26-year-old was jailed on a $125,000 secured bond.

Police say the victim's stolen credit card had been used at the nearby Food Lion, the 252 Tobacco Store, and the Oasis gas station, all within a few blocks of where the robbery took place.
