Judge Blount Sworn In As Replacement For Retiring Pitt County Judge

The replacement for retiring longtime Pitt County Judge Clifton Everett was sworn in Friday.

Judge Marvin Blount III was appointed last week by Governor Bev Perdue to be the successor to retiring Judge Clifton Everett. Everett announced he was retiring last month after serving 18 years on the bench.

Blount currently works as a Special Superior Court Judge traveling across the state. As a Greenville native, he told us he's happy to be staying put in Pitt County with his family. Blount and Everett had nothing but good things to say about each other after Friday's ceremony at the courthouse.

"The opportunity to follow in such a respected judge's footsteps is an honor for me," said Judge Blount.

"Pitt County is going to be in excellent hands with the new resident. I have no reservations whatsoever that he'll do an outstanding job, and I have every confidence in him," said Judge Everett.

Even though he's retiring, Judge Everett was appointed by the governor and sworn in Friday as an emergency Superior Court Judge.

Previous Story

The Governor's office announced Friday that Marvin Blount III will be the next superior court judge for Judicial District 3A, covering Pitt County. Blount III will take retired Judge Clifton Everrett's place.

"I am delighted to appoint Marvin to this position," said Gov. Perdue. "He has served with distinction as a Special Superior Court judge and is highly regarded throughout the district."

According to the Governor's office, Blount III operated a private practice in Greenville, NC years prior to his appointment, specializing in civil litigation. Blount's background also includes time with the Pitt County Bar Association, the East Carolina University Educational Foundation, and the East Carolina University Board of Visitors.

A release from the governor's office said Blount received his law degree from Wake Forest University, and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business administration from East Carolina University.

Keeping law in the family, Blount's father, Marvin Blount, Jr., also served as a Special Superior Court judge in North Carolina.
