Paving Begins On Highway 12

Paving has begun on that section of Highway 12 in Dare County which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy and two nor'easters.

The D.O.T. says the four-tenths of a mile section at the S-curves near Rodanthe should reopen on or before Christmas Day.

Three layers of asphalt are being put down which is being trucked in from a plant in Williamston.

Until the road re-opens, four-wheel drive vehicles will continue to pass through checkpoints on Pea Island and at Mirlo Beach to travel between Hatteras Island and the mainland.

After the first two asphalt layers are put down and the road re-opens, crews will continue work on rebuilding the dunes. When that is completed, contractors will put down the final layer of asphalt.
