A Williamston man died Sunday, the day after the SUV he was riding in flipped over after hitting the brick steps of a church, a guy wire to a utility pole and a parked church van, according to the Highway Patrol.
First Sgt. M.W. Warren with the Highway Patrol says 28-year-old Ronald Everett from Williamston died Sunday at Vidant Medical Center. He was in the front seat of the SUV that wrecked Saturday just south of Lewiston in Bertie County.
Warren says 24-year-old Tremayne Smallwood of Windsor lost control of his 2014 Chevrolet SUV on while headed south on Highway 308 around 4:40 p.m. Saturday. The SUV crossed the centerline and ran off the road to the left. The vehicle then hit the brick steps of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, a guy wire to a utility pole and then a van parked in the church parking lot. Smallwood's SUV flipped over and came to rest upside down.
According to Warren, charges are pending against Smallwood, and speed was a factor in the deadly crash. Another person, 23-year-old Behaiah Urquhart from Ahoskie, was in the backseat. He also survived.
