Pamlico County Sheriff: Man Survives Accidental Shooting

The Pamlico County Sheriff's Office says a man in Vandemere accidentally shot himself while handling a gun Tuesday night. The man's injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to Sheriff Bill Sawyer Jr.

Sheriff Sawyer says the accidental shooting happened on Highway 307 between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The man never called law enforcement, according to the sheriff, but he told the people at the urgent care clinic that he was injured in a drive-by shooting. "The truth came out though," said Sheriff Sawyer, which was the man had shot himself on accident.

The man's name has not been released. He will not be charged with filing a false police report, Sheriff Sawyer said, because he did not tell law enforcement about the fictitious drive-by shooting.
