The U.S. Justice Department is settling a claim against a North Carolina pain clinic that refused to treat a woman because she has AIDS.
The Fayetteville Pain Clinic has agreed to pay $10,000 to the patient and $5,000 to the government for violating the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
The complaint says the woman was suffering from back pain from a car accident and went to the pain clinic for help. But she says the doctor at the center refused to treat her because she had AIDS.
Thomas Perez of the Justice Department says people with HIV and other disabilities deserve equal access to medical treatment.
