Power has been restored after a major electrical outage that impacted customers in four counties.
The outage began around 2:20 p.m. when power that supplies a Progress Energy substation, south of Chocowinity, was lost. That substation supplies power to some 6,000 Progress Energy customers in Beaufort, Craven and Pitt counties, as well as the City of Washington's electric system and some customers on the Tideland EMC system.
Around 4:35 p.m. power first came back on in Chocowinity, parts of Washington as well as Vanceboro.
There's no word yet on exactly what caused the outage, which affected homes in Beaufort, Craven, Martin and Pitt counties.
The outage caused at least one serious accident because of no traffic lights. That accident, at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Highway 264 in Washington, sent two people to the hospital.
More than ten thousand homes and businesses are in the dark after a major power outage affecting customers in four counties.
Progress Energy says around 2:20 p.m. Monday, power went out in multiple places in Beaufort, Pitt, Martin and Craven counties.
The latest information is that 5,910 Progress customers are without power, while thousands more on the City of Washington's electric grid are in the dark too. Progress Energy supplies electricity to the city's system.
Tideland EMC says 3500 of its customers, south of the Pamlico River, are also without power.
Traffic lights at many intersections are down, so officials urge drivers to use caution at intersections.
There has been at least one serious accident at one of those intersections. Two people were hurt in the accident around 4:10 p.m. at U.S. 17 and Highway 264 in Washington.
We have received reports that power is out in Vanceboro, Grimesland, Chocowinity, Aurora, Washington and other parts of Beaufort County. Even some folks in Martin County are without electricity. The bulk of the outage is in Beaufort County.
It's estimated that the power, which is provided by Progress Energy, will be restored by 5:15 p.m.
The trouble is coming from one of the main powerlines that feeds a substation south of Chocowinity. Crews are working on it.
