POLICE: Probation Absconder Found Hiding In Apartment Closet Following Newport Foot Chase

A Carteret County man wanted on several charges is behind bars following a foot chase with police.

Newport Police say they arrested 25-year-old Desmond Bennett of Dutch Treat Mobile Home Park after a foot chase at the Tower Apartments Complex off Howard Boulevard on Friday night. Officers say they were investigating a report of suspicious activity when Bennett was spotted and took off.

Officials say they found Bennett hiding in a closet in an apartment within the complex.

We’re told Bennett was taken to the Carteret County Magistrates Office where he was processed with numerous unserved warrants for drug and motor vehicle violations in both Carteret and Craven County as well as resisting a public officer.

Officials say Bennett was also wanted by the NC Department of Community Corrections as a probation absconder.

Bennett is being held in the Carteret County Jail on a $27,000 secured bond.
