POLICE: Shooting Stemmed From Attempted Drug Robbery

Police say a Greenville man has been charged in a shooting that stemmed from an attempted drug robbery.

Derek Peele is facing several drug charges, along with discharging a weapon in the city and firing into occupied vehicles.

Police say the 21-year-old was selling drugs from his home on John Cox Lane and around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when someone came to his house and tried to rob him of drugs and money. Officers say they believe the two struggled inside the house and the would-be robber ran away. They say Peele then apparently followed the person and fired a .45 caliber handgun at their getaway vehicle as it drove off, striking a nearby house and car.

Officers searched Peele's home and found marijuana, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia, several hundred dollars in cash, a .45 caliber semi-auto handgun, and two semi-automatic .22 caliber rifles.

Peele was jailed under a $30,000 secured bond.
