Owner Of ENC Tutor Centers Named To State Board Of Education

Gov. Pat McCrory has appointed three new members to the State Board of Education, including the operator of Eastern Carolina tutor centers.

McCrory told legislative leaders Wednesday he's chosen Becky Taylor of Greenville, Bill Cobey of Durham, and Greg Alcorn of Salisbury to the state's policy-making board for the public schools.

The General Assembly must vote to confirm the new governor's choices.

Taylor purchased her first Sylvan Learning Center franchise in 1987 and currently owns five in eastern North Carolina. Cobey served one term in Congress in the mid-1980s and was state health and environment secretary under then-Gov. Jim Martin. He was state GOP chairman for four years. Alcorn founded a contact services company and went to Catawba College at the same time McCrory did.

The three would serve terms through March 2019.
