BERTIE COUNTY: Eleven People Dead, Homes Demolished

Bertie County, NC -- There are at least eleven deaths in Bertie County from Saturday's tornadoes.

Tornadoes were spotted in multiple places about 8:00 p.m. Saturday, including the area between Askewville and Colerain.

Homes have been ripped off their foundations, moved and destroyed. A preliminary assessment shows 67 homes are destroyed, with 15 to 20 more damaged.

Monday, state leaders were on the scene, touring the damage.

A shelter was open at the rescue squad on Highway 42 in Colerain.

A trailer park called Jake Dunlow Trailer Court off Askewville Road is heavily hit, with six trailers destroyed.

Superior Court in Bertie County has been cancelled for the week of April 18.
