Officials said a car hit a gas meter on Monday morning, causing a gas leak.

Fire Marshal Danny Hill said it happened near the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Tatum Drive in New Bern just before 7 a.m.

Hill said local businesses were evacuated and closed.

Hill said the gas company was able to shut off the leak around 8:45 a.m. and get it under control.

No word yet on any injuries or charges from the initial car wreck which officials say caused the leak.
