Newport Woman Charged With Stealing $5.3 Million From Business

The accounts payable manager for an Eastern Carolina company has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of stealing millions of dollars from the company.

District attorney Scott Thomas says 42-year-old Susan Garcia of Newport is charged with taking $5.3 million from 2007 to 2012 from Big Rock Sports, LLC, which has subsidiary companies including Henry's Tackle, LLC.

Garcia faces a total of eight charges.

As accounts payable manager, Thomas says Garcia was responsible for obtaining, distributing and tracking the use of a number of company credit cards belonging to Big Rock Sports, LLC.

Thomas says Garcia used several cards to make unauthorized personal purchases, and falsified the corporate accounting records to cover the unlawful use.

The unauthorized purchases included subscriptions to online gambling sites, purchases from and other retailers, and payment for personal travel.

Lawmen say due to the high volume of sales by Big Rock Sports, LLC, and Garcia's efforts in concealing her wrongdoing, the unlawful use of the company cards was hidden for some time.

Big Rock Sports, LLC is an outdoor sporting goods distributor, wholesaler, service provider and business partner to the outdoor retail market. Headquartered in Graham, NC. Big Rock has over 600 employees throughout North America, including approximately 80 at its Newport offices.

Garcia will have a first appearance in Carteret County Superior Court June 3, 2013.

Garcia is in the Carteret County Jail under a $ 5,000,000 secured bond.
