A volunteer firefighter has been suspended after authorities say he concocted an explosive device, and set it off twice at the fire department.

Newport Police Chief Jeff Clark says the Carteret County District Attorney's Office declined to prosecute the firefighter, who they did not name.

Clark says on June 14th and June 16th the firefighter set off the devices at the fire department. He said the device was made with household items that ruptured its container.

No injuries or damage resulted from the explosions.
