Newport Couple Charged After Meth Lab Found In Woods

Deputies said one Carteret County couple was found cooking up more than romance at their home.

Detectives with the sheriff's office said they got tips leading them to the home of Christopher Byrd and Chelsea Lewis on Croatan Drive in Newport.

Deputies said they found precursors and evidence of methamphetamine in the couple's home.

After further questioning, detectives said they found a stocked meth lab in the woods off Lake Road.

Detectives called in the State Bureau of Investigation to help safely shut down and dispose of the lab in the woods.

Byrd was charged with making and possessing meth along with possession of drug paraphernalia. Deputies said he had outstanding charges for trafficking the drug in Onslow County. His bond was set at $600,000.

Lewis was charged with possession meth precursors. Her bond was set at $100,000.
