New Twist In Overdue Electric Bill Scam

There's a new wrinkle to an old scam that's being reported across Eastern Carolina.

Multiple utilities are warning their customers that scammers are threatening disconnection unless immediate payment is received. The latest twist is that scammers are using the winter weather by offering customers the option to pay bills over the phone, rather than going out in the cold.

Greenville Utilities says some scammers are even using legitimate names of utility workers.

Kinston Utilities warned its customers to call police if their received such a call, while the Attorney General's Office tells WITN News that they have received many complaints today from the Engelhard area of Hyde County about the scam.

GUC says it never asks or requires customers who are behind on their bills to pay immediately or to purchase a prepaid debit card. If you suspect fraud, GUC says to hang up, call police and then give them a call.
