There is now much needed relief for traffic trying to get to Camp Lejeune during rush hour. A new gate on Lejeune Boulevard opened Thursday.
Camp Lejeune officials said they are very aware of the traffic issues during the morning commute hours around the base. More than 20,000 people pass through the base's gates every day, not to mention the thousands of motorists in the area surrounding Camp Lejeune.
Public Affairs Director Nat Fahy said construction of a new gate will alleviate some of these problems.
The new Wilson Gate Entry opened for a brief period, between 5:30 and 8:00 a.m. Fahy said gate officials noticed not many people took advantage of the new route. He said they expect more and more people to slowly start using the new entrance. The outbound side is open 24/7.
The new gate will be open Monday through Friday in the early morning hours. After 8:00 a.m. the gate's inbound side will be closed allowing crews to continue construction.
The Wilson Gate Entry is expected to be complete and open for full-time use by late 2015.
