Man With Fresh Bullet Wound Charged In New Bern Robbery

A man with a fresh bullet wound has been charged with one of three armed robberies in New Bern Monday night.

Matthew Small was charged today with the hold-up at the Five Points Mini Mart on Oaks Road. In that robbery, a store customer says he shot at one of the fleeing robbers. When arrested Small had a recent bullet wound to his leg, but police are still investigating whether that is connected to the robbery.

Officers say they are still looking for the second person involved. They do not believe this robbery was connected to two others that happened earlier that evening.

The 21-year-old Small, who is also charged with DWI, is jailed on a $175,000 secured bond.

A customer at one of three stores held-up last night in New Bern says he shot at one of the robbers.

Police say the Family Dollar on Neuse Boulevard near Fort Trotten Park was held up at gunpoint, along with convenience stores at the intersection of Glenburnie and Oaks roads and Fleet and Broad streets.

A customer at the Mini Mart on Glenburnie Road tells WITN that he was inside the store visiting a friend who is the clerk. The man, who says he was a concealed and carry permit for his gun, says after one of the gunmen noticed he was armed, the two started to leave. He says that's when he fired one round toward the middle of the robber's back as he was going through the door.

It's unknown if the robber was hit, but police searched for the bullet and could not find it.

The Mini Mart clerk told us he was alerted to the two other robberies, so that's when he took most of the cash out of the register, leaving just $60. He said moments later the two masked gunman came in, one with a shotgun, the other with a pistol.

New Bern police believe the Family Dollar robbery and the Broad Street Mini Mart are related, while the Oaks Road Mini Mart hold-up was committed by different robbers.

So far police have not made any arrests.
