A mayor who has been his share of controversies says he will not seek another term.

New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis tells WITN he will not run for re-election later this year.

Bettis, who was elected in 2009, says during his original campaign he told voters he would only serve one term and he is keeping that promise.

The mayor told us he is going public this early with his plans so future Board of Aldermen meetings will not become political.

Two years ago Bettis, who is a New Bern attorney, was arrested for assaulting a woman on the YMCA pool. But after a day-long trial, the mayor was found not guilty.
