New Bern Business Uses Same Hurricane Plywood Since 1996

Who says you can't recycle when it comes to hurricane preparations.

One store in downtown New Bern has been using the same plywood to protect its storefront now for 18 years.

Tom's Coins & Antiques once again boarded up this week, this time for Hurricane Arthur.

On the front of the Middle Street business is written "Go Away Arthur", but before that are names of hurricanes from previous years, all crossed off.

The first was Bertha, in 1996. Other notables are Fran, Floyd, and who can forget Dennis, a hurricane that threatened Eastern Carolina twice during the summer of 1999. There are two crossed off names for that storm.
