Deputies say a Pitt County man dipped into his retirement savings to pay for a new roof, but the men he paid never did the work.
Hubert Monk, Jr. of Bayboro is charged with Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretense while Robert Powers of New Bern is charged with Aid and Abet Obtaining Property by False Pretense.
The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says Luke Holliday of Clarks Neck Rd. reported he paid Monk and Powers $5,500 in cash in April to replace the roof on his house. Holliday told detectives he and his wife are an older couple and had to dip into their retirement savings to pay for the project. However, five months after paying the two men, Holliday says he still has the same roof; they never did the work they were paid upfront to do. Holliday says he tried several times to get the men to do the work or get his money back, but he ended up having to call law enforcement.
Both men were booked under $10,000 bonds, which they posted to be released from the Pitt County Detention Center.
