Police said they arrived to the scene of a wreck Monday night to find a woman hyperventilating in her vehicle and the origin of her fear already scurried into the woods.
River Bend police said they got a call at 11:44 p.m. Monday to Highway 17 South near Old Pollocksville Road.
According to police, 30-year-old Rashidah Richardson said she was driving her sport-utility vehicle along the highway when a huge bear dart out in front of her.
Officer Sean Joll said the woman was uninjured and reported the bear kept running across the highway and disappeared into the dark after the brief collision.
The SUV did not sustain serious damage, according to police.
When asked if any charges would be filed, Officer Joll replied, "Only if I can find that bear."
