North Carolina Catholics are being asked to vote for the constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
A letter from the two NC Catholic Bishops was delivered to church members this weekend urging them to "Vote on May 8 for protecting traditional marriage in North Carolina."
The letter from Charlotte Diocese Bishop Most Reverend Peter Jugis and Raleigh Diocese Bishop Most Reverend Michael Burbidge, which covers Eastern Carolina, says, "We ask you, no matter what position you currently hold about the definition of marriage, to become informed about our Church's teaching, to be respectful in all discussions about this important issue and to vote."
The Bishops say in the letter they expect the debate on this issue will be intense, so videos are being produced to help Catholics in their role as faithful citizens and to engage the debate in a manner that never diminishes the inherent dignity of any person.
Records indicate there are about 340,000 NC Catholics.
