State Schools Superintendent Warns Of Teacher Losses

North Carolina's schools superintendent says the state is facing a teacher shortage because of low pay.

Schools Superintendent June Atkinson told The Asheville Citizen-Times on Monday that the state is 46th in the country in teacher pay.

Atkinson says the state is losing ground and could face a shortage of teachers in the future. She says not only will teachers leave the profession, but students will be discouraged from becoming teachers.

She says there's a national movement to blame teachers for problems in public schools. She says that makes it harder for the teachers who are working hard every day.

Atkinson says the state needs to find ways to show teachers they are valued.

Atkinson was in Asheville for a leadership conference for principals and schools superintendents.
