NC Officers To Watch For Impaired Boaters

Officers with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will patrol the waters this Memorial Day weekend, looking for people who are driving boats while impaired.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported (http://bit.ly/S3o9pz) that impaired boaters can face jail time and a fine of at least $250.

Wildlife Commission Sgt. Charles Smith says it's more complicated to arrest an impaired boater than a driver because the boat must be secured and the boater must get to land. In addition, many other people may be on the boat.

Also, Smith says boaters should remember that state law requires children 12 and younger to wear life jackets while boating.

Other law enforcement officials will check boats to make sure they have the proper equipment.
