Protesters angry that Durham police refuse to explain why a teenager was shot to death in the back of a patrol car smashed windows at the police department's headquarters.
Durham police took several people into custody after the Friday night violence. Police spokeswomen did not reply Saturday to messages from The Associated Press about whether anyone faces criminal charges.
About 200 people marched to Durham's downtown police headquarters hours after Chief Jose Lopez said he could not explain why 17-year-old Jesus Huerta died while state investigators looked into the case. Lopez said it could be months before the State Bureau of Investigation's findings become public.
A 911 recording says Huerta was shot while in a cruiser with Officer Samuel Duncan in the parking lot of police headquarters early Tuesday.
