CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - A couple accused of recruiting a woman in North Carolina to work in the sex trade face charges under New Jersey's tougher human trafficking law.
Bail is set at $400,000 each for 41-year-old Van Howell of Winslow Township, N.J., and 30-year-old Krista Burton of Columbia, Pa.
Prosecutors say the couple paid for a bus ticket to transport the 26-year-old, who appears to have been engaged in the sex trade in Cherokee, N.C., to New Jersey. Prosecutors say the couple told her she was expected to earn money for them through sex and would suffer consequences if she didn't.
The arrests came as a result of a prostitution sting soon after she arrived.
The pair would face a mandatory 20-year prison sentence if convicted under New Jersey's tougher human trafficking law.
