NASCAR legend Dick Trickle was found dead in a Lincoln County cemetery, from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound.
Deputies say the county's communications center received a phone call shortly after noon Thursday apparently from Trickle that "there would be a dead body and it would be his." A return call got no answer.
Emergency workers found the man's body lying near his pickup truck at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boger City.
According to NASCAR, Trickle was in more than 2,000 races, logging one million laps. In 1989 he was named NASCAR Rookie of the Year.
Deputies say the 71-year-old Trickle was a Lincoln County resident since the early 1990s.
