The head of the Halifax County NAACP is criticizing an agreement that allowed a former Scotland Neck police officer to plead guilty to a misdemeanor in the death of a man who died after being shot with a stun gun.
The Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids reported NAACP President David Harvey says the agreement with 27-year-old John Turner is appalling. Turner was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months unsupervised probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge in the death of 61-year-old Roger Anthony.
District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey says she worked with Anthony's family to reach a resolution.
Anthony died in November 2011 from blunt force trauma to the head, which a civil lawsuit says occurred when Anthony fell from his bike after being shot with the stun gun.
