Grimesland Bridge Reopened After Multiple Wrecks

Multiple car wrecks involving a total of six vehicles closed down a Pitt County bridge this afternoon because of severe icing.

Around 2:45 p.m. the Highway Patrol closed down the Grimesland Bridge, a high rise span across the Tar River. It reopened about 6:40 p.m.

Troopers say there were three accidents on the span, each involving two vehicles.

The Highway Patrol says the bridge is solid ice and they'll keep the bridge closed until the bridge superintendent says it's safe to travel on.

Two of the crashes had injuries with at least two people transported to Vidant Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
