Police Lower Death Toll In Brazil Fire To 232

A police spokesman says officials have lowered the known death toll in from the blaze that swept through a Brazilian nightclub to 232.

Maj Cleberton Braida Bastianello earlier said 245 had died, but he says a new count of bodies brought to a local gymnasium led to a lower count.

Police now say 245 have died in a devastating nightclub fire in southern Brazil.

Police Maj. Cleberson Braida says that's the total of dead at the club. He says the bodies have been brought to a gymnasium in the city of Santa Maria.

Sandro Meinerz, spokesman for the police in the city of Santa Maria, told local media that the fire broke out at the Kiss club while a band was performing.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, officials said. The total number of victims is still unknown and there may be hundreds injured, Civil Police and regional government spokesman Marcelo Arigoni told Radio Gaucha.
