Moped Driver Hospitalized After Other Driver Fell Asleep

The Highway Patrol says the driver of a moped was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville after an early morning crash in Martin County.

Troopers say Valley Andrews of Robersonville was hit by a man driving a passenger car on Highway 64 Alternate near Bailey Rd. just outside of Everetts around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Both drivers were headed eastbound.

The Highway Patrol says 27-year-old Michaelis Brown fell asleep at the wheel and hit the moped from behind as he started to run off the road to the right.

Andrews was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center from Martin General Hospital in Williamston, but his injuries are not life-threatening, according to the investigating trooper.

Brown is charged with failure to maintain lane control and failure to reduce speed.
