New Bern Mom Appears Before Judge For Fatal Wreck

A mother charged in a DWI crash that killed her daughter appeared before a judge this morning after being arrested on more charges last week.

Amber Sandvig of New Bern was arrested Thursday night by state troopers. The 24-year-old was originally charged with DWI, driving left of center and a child restraint violation. Now, after lab results are back, she has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, three counts of felony serious injury by vehicle and two counts of felony child abuse.

The February 22nd accident on Brices Creek Road killed her six year old daughter, Alanna and injured her two year old son.

"These additional charges have been filed based upon the lab result confirming the presence of oxycodone, the eyewitness observation of the operation of the vehicle prior to and at the time of the collision, and the drug paraphernalia recovered from Ms. Sandvig and her car," said District Attorney Scott Thomas. "This tragic event resulted in the death of Alanna and serious injury to Blaze and Mr. and Mrs. Payne. Prescription drug abuse is not a victimless crime. It is dangerous for the user and for anyone who comes into contact with that user."

Sandvig had been at Vidant Medical Center for several weeks recovering from her injuries.

The judge kept the woman's bond at $2 million.
