The state medical examiner's office says the death of former N.C. Commerce Secretary and congressional candidate Keith Crisco was due to heart problems.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that the medical examiner's report noted that the 71-year-old Crisco had a history of high blood pressure, and the autopsy disclosed severe arteriosclerosis and hypertension.
Crisco fell at his home on May 12, one day before former "American Idol" star Clay Aiken was named the winner in the Democratic primary for the 2nd Congressional District. Aiken won by less than 400 votes.
Crisco's campaign manager said the two had counted the absentee votes in two key counties, forcing Crisco to acknowledge defeat. He had decided to concede his loss to Aiken, but he died the day before doing so.
