Mechanical Issue Forces Amended Ferry Schedule

The emergency ferry route from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe is running on an amended schedule due to a mechanical problem with one of the ferries.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the amended schedule starts at 6 a.m. Sunday. One ferry broke down Friday night, forcing it out of service. It was taken to the agency's ferry division shipyard for repairs.

A ferry will depart Stumpy Point every two hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.

Departures from Rodanthe will also occur every two hours, between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

State officials activated the emergency ferry route to help residents trying to return to Hatteras Island after Hurricane Sandy.
